In the time of reformation there was such a crisis, that the believers had to ask what is the church really. As the protestant Christians were suddenly left outside the Catholic church, yet identified themselves as Christians, they had to go through this question. It was horrible to be left outside the only church they knew. Then it was defined that the church is where the word of God is faithfully preached and the sacraments are correctly served. God is donating faith through Bible, baptism and holy communion. Where these are practiced, there is the church. So we realize that church is ultimately not a legal entity. Therefore IEC is really a church and part of the global Church of Christ. This is a fact, although IEC is an association in the legal sense. Christian organisations and associations are normally established to do some special tasks like evangelising the children or students, sending missionaries, educating workers and so forth. Local churches are served by these specialist organisations. Mission agencies and evangelistic organisations bring new people to the church. We understand that IEC is not a mission organisation serving some church, but IEC is a church. IEC is not sending people somewhere else, but is receiving people to Christian fellowship. Who can be a member of the church? "Repent and be baptised" says Peter in the Acts. "Who believes and is baptised" says Mark in the Gospel. It can be that a believing Christian is not yet baptised. But there is no reason why a Christian should not receive baptism. Baptism is public affair and usually we can somehow document who has been baptised. It is much harder to know who really believes. When we go through the membership applications in the IEC board meetings, the board is often asking me if the applicants are real believers. I can only answer according to my impression. Christian faith is indicated in our way of speaking and behaviour. A true Christian confesses faith in front of people. A true Christian can not continue committing a sin peacefully, but is in a battle against sin in his or her life. Therefore we try to evaluate the daily walk of the person when accepting new members: Is this person fighting against sin? Church is a group of forgiven sinners, who are committed to follow Christ.
